at Stafford! - by Charli Brown
Chuck
Darling held off a hard charging Richard Davidowitz to win the Tech-Net Spring
Sizzler at the Stafford Motor Speedway, Thursday
night.
Stafford Springs, CT - Saginaw,
Michigan's Chuck Darling held off a hard charging Richard Davidowitz to
win the Tech-Net Spring Sizzler at the Stafford Motor Speedway,
Thursday night for his first win of the 2009 season.
Darling
started off the night by winning the NPGPro.com Pole Award with a lap
time of 18.875 seconds at 95.364 Miles Per Hour. Tony Hanbury was
second fastest, followed by current point leader Richie Coy, Charli
Brown and Bobby Ambroceo.
The car count was at a season high 21
cars with several former divisional champions in the field. Also in
attendance were Riverhead Raceway modified hot shoe, Justin Bonsignore
as well as Chemung Speedrome modified champion, Tony Hanbury.
At
the drop of the green flag, Chuck Darling quickly pulled out front,
bringing Richie Coy and Charli Brown with him as outside pole sitter
Tony Hanbury dropped back to the fifth position at the completion of
lap one.
Darling led the next twelve laps to the race's first
caution at lap thirteen for AJ Griffin who spun in turn two while
racing with Justin Strumpf for the tenth spot.
Chuck Darling
gave up the lead to Richie Coy and headed to pit road under this
caution, while Tony Hanbury and Corey Riley also stopped for service.
Richie
Coy led to the restart on lap 19 over Bobby Ambroceo, Charli Brown, Rex
Hoyle and Scott Bryant. Sixth through tenth were Chris O'Shell, Mike
House, Richard Davidowitz, Justin Strumpf and Justin Bonsignore.
Coy
survived three double file restarts and led the next 25 laps to the
race's fifth caution on lap 44 for Ryan Curran and Matthew Wells
getting together in turn one. Coy lead the top seven cars to pit road for
service as Chuck Darling inherited the lead by staying out behind the
Chevrolet pace car.
Darling led to the restart on lap 50 and took home the KING Design
Halfway Leader Award over Justin Bonsignore, AJ Griffin, Chris O'Shell
and Scott Bryant. Sixth through tenth were Doug Beaulieu, Rex Hoyle,
Richard Davidowitz, Justin Strumpf and JD Laird.
The race's
eighth caution came out on lap 65 for Bobby Ambroceo and Rex Hoyle
getting together in turn three while racing for the sixth spot. Chris
O'Shell had just passed Justin Bonsignore for the second position and
Bonsignore headed to pit road with JD Laird under this caution.
Chuck
Darling led to the restart on lap 71 over Chris O'Shell, Richard
Davidowitz, Justin Strumpf and Richie Coy. Sixth was Charli Brown
followed by Rex Hoyle, Mike House, Corey Riley and Rick Dutra. Darling
slowly opened a three car length lead while the rest of the top seven cars
were nose to tail racing for position.
The race's final caution
came out on lap 90 for Chris O'Shell who spun out of the second spot in
turn four causing the rest of the leaders behind him to take evasive
action to miss his spinning car. This put Richard Davidowitz up into
the second spot for the race's final restart on lap 95.
Darling
and Davidowitz opened a three car length lead on Justin Strumpf, who
was having a battle of his own trying to hold off Richie Coy for third.
Davidowitz made one last-ditch effort for the lead
as they entered turn three, but Darling held him off and flashed under
the double Sunoco checkered flags for his first win of the 2009 season
with Davidowitz a car length behind to finish second. Justin Strumpf
came home third, followed by Richie Coy in fourth and Rex Hoyle finishing fifth.
Charli Brown was sixth with JD Laird, Rick Dutra, Justin Bonsignore and
AJ Griffin rounding out the top ten.
The popular Michigan driver
waved to the fans with a big smile as he climbed out of his Howe Racing
Enterprises Pontiac. "I saw the 25 (Davidowitz) car in my mirror and
knew I couldn't make any mistakes on that last run or else we'd lose
this thing" explained the race winner. "This is the same car that won
at Spencer last year, so it must really like these flat half mile
tracks" he laughed. "I wasn't sure about pitting as early as we did, but it was the
right call and I'm glad it worked out."
Race winner Chuck
Darling cashed in on most of the post race awards including the
NPGPro.com Pole Award, The KING Design Halfway Leader Award and the
Mends Image Most Laps Led Award. Richard Davidowitz won the Powerade
"Power Move of the Race" Award for his drive to second from the
sixteenth starting spot, while Bobby Ambroceo set the Fastech Race Car
Bodies Fastest Lap of the Race. Tony Hanbury took home the Hoosier Hard
Luck Award.
Next week, the Whelen Modified Online Tour heads to
the Richmond International Raceway for the SAFER Barrier Project.com
100. This is the final event on the Spring Season schedule before the
competitors get a weekend off for the Memorial Day holiday. Richie Coy
continues to hold a 194 point lead over Chris O'Shell, Charli Brown,
Bobby Ambroceo and Mike House.
